Introduction

#NewLean is a proposed process that has its roots in my upbringing as a #romancatholic and the belief in universal truths that this upbringing infused in me.

But in parallel, whilst my mother subscribed rigorously to a sometimes really harsh view of what life had to mean, which affected me and still does as a human being who sometimes believes himself undeserving of anything good, my father was a scientist, mathematician and physicist.

This need as a child to hold vastly contrary views in my head at the same time — and still survive, if not thrive — meant I grew up with what #fscottfitzgerald termed a higher intelligence: the capacity, indeed, to hold two or more contrary perceptions of the world in one's brain simultaneously — and yet still manage to function.

It led me to both create my own belief system around the universality of certain truths and, simultaneously, inscribe in my personal philosophies and critical strategies the flexibility and reactive generosity which the scientific method, truly implemented, demands of us.

As you can see if you click through to the above link, a lot of theorising lay behind a simple idea: in order to create niche solutions cost-effectively we need to have a much better, much more accurate and universally truthful set of software #discovery processes and discrete tools.

What #NewLean will now do

#NewLean now deepens all of this and takes it to a different level entirely. It in fact proposes the delivery of precisely the above-described.

Allegedly killer applications such as #chatgpt dress up #offthepeg software as if it were a solution to everything and anything: that is, supposedly #bespoke and #madetomeasure. This is manifestly a lie: a profitable lie for the very few and a massive deception for the majority, serving as it does to suck most of the world's investors out of intelligent software delivery where careful investment criteria need to be developed and rehearsed before an investment is proceeded with, and into the whirlpool of an investment dynamic which only happens because of crass marketing messaging from companies which know better and choose not to act on their understanding of what's really needed by a world increasingly desperate for solutions to the very biggest problems:

With #NewLean we believe we are forging a truly #generalpurposetechnology in order that, as a result, a niche #ai and related becomes much easier to deliver on. (Btw, historical examples of such #generalpurposetechnologies (GPTs) are things like email, the wheel, and the printing-press: #tech which can easily find its applications in all fields of human endeavour.)

Comparing traditional #lean and our proposed #NewLean

In this sense, compare #NewLean to existing, traditional #lean:

1. Existing #lean solves one problem only: how to invoice the client ASAP. It prioritises problem-solving not in terms of gravity of problem but ease of sell. Existing #lean is also designed to shrug of #complexproblems: it can only use the process of simplifying a problem down to component and separate parts to solve anything: with this, essentially #complexproblems are lost to traditional #lean because if not treated as a whole they inevitably find their essence being dismissed.

2. #NewLean, meantime, is designed from the ground up to deliver on accurate #discovery datasets obtained through #privacypositive interview and reporting spaces. Equally, it is shaped and scoped, from the same basic foundational structures, to deal with #complexproblems which do NOT demand that if they cannot be expressed in an elevator ride or a tweet, then they cannot be broached by an investor. Neither do the advocates of #NewLean think that if you cannot easily express your ideas in such an elevator ride, you still don't know your domain with a competence which justifies such investment.

If traditional #lean has remained a strength in software development for so long, it doesn't mean it's worked for everyone — even as it has clearly worked for some. Let's now begin to create new processes which allow every stakeholder impacted by software development processes to benefit from the software industry on equally productive terms.
